I'm really thrilled to be here. Sometimes doing good for awhile gives us permission to do bad.This is stupid, I don't even care about it.Our fear and insecurities can lead to us devalue the entire project altogether. But there are also a lot of other ways to use habits. They call procrastination the grave where opportunity is buried. For example, if theres a task associated with your job that you dont want to do, you can still link it with something you believe in. Im thinking of putting something off until Friday afternoon and then writing an email to kick it into somebody elses pile of work at the end of the week. One is quickly testing assumptions. So my strategy and my system is kind of tailored to that. So even though I dont like providing tech help, I like the idea that I will compensate for her weaknesses and she will compensate for mine, and that well support each other through that. Where can you place it? So rather than frame it in terms of productivity, which I think feeds into a lot of our social norms about what we should and shouldn't be doing and how much we should and shouldn't be doing, I'd rather frame it around whether you're reaching your goals or not or do you have all these things you started and never finished, do you have all these unfulfilled goals that you just never got round to doing because of fear of failure or just worried it wasn't going to be good enough or worried whether you could manage maybe some of the challenges that you might face when you engage with that task? As we build a habit of procrastinating, we develop false beliefs that worsen the habit. So it's much easier to study it instead of a naturalistic setting by just getting people to self-report or to look at people who chronically procrastinate because what you study in the lab is going to be delay for sure, but it not isn't necessarily going to be procrastination. Putting aside whether these lists are historically accurate, they raise the question, is it possible to be a chronic procrastinator but also extremely productive? So it's actually quite high in college and university samples. They dont think, Oh, I need to reduce all these negative emotions or theyre going to cause me to go off track with my goals. They associate strong emotions with propelling them to their goals, not with them taking them away from their goals. And this makes some sense if we think about how harmful stress is to our bodies. Procrastination thrives in secrecy and isolation. Procrastination is the act of avoiding something through delay or postponement. So doing compassionate self talk is useful about the feelings that youre having. Far more than a productivity hack. So we think about having systems for tasks we do all the time, but we often dont think about having a system for novel tasks. Recognizing this link led to the revelation that fighting procrastination might help him stop feeling like he didnt deserve to be in his position. Because youve given us a lot of tips on managing yourself individually. What does emotion regulation have to do with procrastination? So what people want to do is look at the forms of procrastination with the most potential for major harm in their lives, that are causing them the most bother, and be really confident that theyve got strategies for dealing with those. And I think this happens a lot with procrastination, that we predict that we're going to feel a lot worse when we're doing the task than when we actually get on and just do it. Sirois: It has a huge impact on it and I think this is a thing a lot of people don't think about when they think about procrastination. Well, I want to thank you for joining me today, Dr. Sirois. One of the main reasons people procrastinate is fear. So we tend to think of the productivity side of it. But then you do still need those other little skills to soothe yourself a little bit. And in the workplace as well. We always think of there being bidirectional arrows between all of those things. Adam Grant posted this interesting thing on Instagram a few weeks ago where he said, I wouldve started on Instagram a long, long time ago if I had realized I could just repost my words, if I could just post pictures of my words rather than having to post pictures and videos that we more associate with Instagram. And obviously he does these, theyre essentially like tweets, theyre just these little quotes. And they should have an explicit system. On a level, thats useful. People will say its an emotional thing and its caused by people being intolerant of emotions. And we also think that it's going to last longer, we're going to be stuck in this state of frustration or stress or what have you as we're struggling with this task. Its the idea that you can use your emotions as fuel for your goals, that you dont need to reduce your negative emotions. And of course, we all know about productive procrastination. And procrastination is a form of delay, so we can say that all procrastination is delay, but not all delay is procrastination. And really what that means is that procrastination is a very specific type of delay and how researchers in the field, how we define it so that we can go out and explore what are the consequences and causes of procrastination, we define procrastination as an unnecessary form of delay. So yeah, I would say there is some evidence suggest men might procrastinate a little bit more than women, but it's not a huge difference and we may get some evidence in the coming years that that levels out because I think it is really driven also by what's going on. I think that would kind of level the playing field for many people as well in terms of whether they were able to be productive or whether they found themselves falling into a trap of procrastination. For good! Sometimes the emotion will disguise itself as a physical sensation, such as anxiousness, nausea, or a rapid heartbeat. So if we tell people to recall a time that they're procrastinating and then give them this sort of script that re-frames that experience in a self-compassionate manner, basically You're not the first person to procrastinate, nor will you be the last. And there's been some research on that. So I dont think about a hundred different solutions to mitigate against each problem. Sometimes we just overestimate how much we can focus in the day. I have the value of the two of us being in a relationship where we make up for each others weaknesses, that were there to compensate for each others weaknesses. Is there a difference? Because all of those things have bidirectional arrows between them, what it in essence means is that even if you see your procrastination as being primarily emotional or primarily cognitive, or primarily about habits. But we can easily say it's all to do with mood management," Sirois says. If you want a behavior to require less self control, then make it a consistent habit.
